Minister Macpherson and Mayor Truter Make a Commitment to Revitalize Small Harbors in Saldanha Bay

Saldanha Bay – Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson, alongside Saldanha Bay Local Municipality Mayor André Truter, has pledged to collaborate on revitalising the harbours to benefit the local economy.

This commitment was made following an oversight visit to the small harbours of St Helena Bay and Saldanha Bay on Tuesday morning, March 25, 2025.

The two small harbours, under the ownership and management of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, have, over the years, deteriorated, frequently drawing criminal activity and discouraging investment in nearby communities.

In accordance with the promises made during his State of the Nation Address reply in Parliament a month ago, Minister Macpherson stated he would direct departmental officials to formulate a master plan for the small harbours, ensuring they contribute to the Saldanha Bay economy through developments in fishing and tourism.

“Just as the V&A Waterfront serves as a prime example of how harbours can attract investment and generate thousands of jobs, we believe that small harbours like St Helena Bay and Saldanha Bay should be redeveloped to act as economic engines for their communities,” remarked Minister Macpherson.

“The V&A Waterfront has facilitated the creation of over 60,000 jobs, and we are convinced this level of achievement can be replicated nationwide—providing job opportunities for communities such as Saldanha Bay.”

Mayor Truter expressed his appreciation for the Minister’s commitment, highlighting that today’s discussions were highly positive and reflected a strong focus on action and timelines.

“Collaborating with a Minister who understands the necessary steps and execution strategies is invigorating,” commented Mayor Truter.

“Minister Macpherson has set clear implementation timelines, and as Saldanha Bay Municipality, we eagerly anticipate embarking on this journey alongside the Minister and the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.”
