FKF Addresses Match-Fixing Accusations Involving Goalkeeper

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has responded to allegations regarding a supposed match-fixing scandal involving Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi, after a video surfaced that seemingly shows him negotiating a deal to sway the outcome of a match.

The covertly filmed footage shows the seasoned keeper engaged in a serious conversation with an off-camera individual while seated in the back of a parked vehicle. The precise timing of the recording remains unknown.

Despite Matasi’s considerable experience with top teams in the Kenyan Premier League, including AFC Leopards, Tusker FC, and Posta Rangers, the 37-year-old has been prone to errors—often leading to doubts about his capabilities as a goalkeeper of his caliber.

Currently, he plays for Kakamega Homeboyz after leaving Kenya Police. Matasi committed two significant blunders during Kenya’s 4-1 loss to Cameroon in last October’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers, resulting in him being benched in the next match. In light of this, FKF has launched an investigation.

“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) acknowledges the videos circulating online involving goalkeeper Patrick Matasi, which raise serious concerns regarding potential match manipulation,” stated the governing body of Kenyan football.

“FKF is dedicated to ensuring the integrity of football and has initiated an official investigation in partnership with FIFA, CAF, and other relevant bodies. We reinforce our zero-tolerance stance on match manipulation and are committed to upholding the integrity of our competitions.

“The investigation will adhere to FKF’s Anti-Match Manipulation Regulations and FIFA standards to guarantee a fair, transparent, and comprehensive process. The rights of both the player and his club will be respected, and appropriate actions will be taken based on the investigation’s findings.

“We encourage anyone with credible information to aid in this investigation. All information submitted will be handled with the highest level of confidentiality. Tips can be forwarded to integrity@footballkenya.org. FKF will provide further updates as the inquiry progresses.

Following a series of mistakes, Matasi appears to have lost favor with the Kenya national team. The new Harambee Stars coach, Benni McCarthy, did not include the experienced goalkeeper when naming his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Instead, Ian Otieno, the goalkeeper for Richards Bay, was given the starting position as the East African team played to a 3-3 draw against Gambia in McCarthy’s debut match, followed by a 2-1 defeat to Gabon on Sunday.
