Mpumalanga Police Arrest 15 Suspects Linked to Illegal Mining Operations

Pilgrims Rest – The police in Mpumalanga have apprehended 15 individuals in connection with illegal mining activities in Pilgrims Rest, located near Sabie outside Mashishing (formerly known as Lydenburg).

The arrested individuals, including women aged between 18 and 45, were taken into custody on Thursday, March 27, 2025.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the spokesperson for the Mpumalanga police, initial investigations indicate that all the arrested individuals are undocumented foreign nationals.

She noted that the police collaborated with the Department of Home Affairs to verify the immigration status of the suspects.

“Members of the combat and proactive team arrested suspects lacking valid documentation to remain in South Africa,” stated Lieutenant Colonel Ndubane.

“Police investigators are working alongside officials from the Department of Home Affairs to clarify the immigration status of those arrested.”

She also mentioned that mining equipment was confiscated from the suspects.

“During the arrests, the diligent team seized Phendukas, gas cylinders, motors, and various other illegal mining tools,” Ndubane added.

All individuals charged with unlawful mining will soon appear in court at the Pilgrims Rest Periodical Court.
