Witbooi: Demonstrating Exceptional Resilience

Emile Witbooi, a standout talent from South Africa, showcased his team’s resolve during their exhilarating comeback victory against Egypt at the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Casablanca on Monday.

The son of Surprise Ralani delivered an impressive performance, scoring two goals in a thrilling resurgence against the Young Pharaohs. After trailing 3-1, South Africa clinched a remarkable 4-3 victory.

Witbooi expertly spearheaded the comeback, demonstrating remarkable maturity. He provided a perfectly timed assist and found the net with the match-winning goal, dominating the field with his vision, calmness, and precision as a midfielder for Cape Town City FC.

“It was a game filled with pressure, but we showed true grit to fight back and claim the win,” Witbooi stated after being named Man of the Match on CAF online.

“I’m happy with our first game – the team handled the tough moments well, which will boost our confidence as we progress.”

The 16-year-old, who has trained with Chelsea’s youth academy, made an immediate impact with a precise left-footed assist for South Africa’s opening goal. However, it was his crucial winning goal that capped off a stellar performance in the match.

“I love having the ball, directing the play, and helping my teammates find their positions,” said the modest Witbooi.

“We stayed composed and took our chances. This victory reflects our mindset – we never give up.”

Witbooi expressed his appreciation for his teammates while accepting the Man of the Match trophy.

“First, I want to thank the Almighty Lord for giving me this opportunity to shine. I also thank the technical staff, my coaches, and my teammates because this is a collective achievement,” stated Witbooi.

“I’m thankful to my family for all their support. The team displayed incredible spirit, which I am proud of.

“Thank you for the support, South Africa. Vamos!”

This victory places South Africa at the top of Group B alongside Burkina Faso, who also mounted a comeback to beat Cameroon 2-1.

The Amajimbos will now focus on their upcoming match against Cameroon on Thursday, while Egypt aims to recover against Burkina Faso.
