The Stormers Secure New Deal with Boks Utility Player

The DHL Stormers have officially confirmed that Springbok utility back Damian Willemse has signed an extension to his contract, keeping him with the club until 2027.

Willemse, who missed all of last year’s Springbok matches because of a broken finger—including the Rugby Championship win—was rumored to be considering a move to Ireland’s Leinster, where he could have reunited with former Springbok coach Jacques Nienaber.

Nienaber was at the helm when the Springboks defeated the British and Irish Lions in the 2021 series and successfully defended their Rugby World Cup title in 2023 before taking on a role in Ireland.

“In response to media speculation, the DHL Stormers would like to clarify that Damian Willemse will continue to be with the club and will not entertain any offers, as he is under contract until 2027,” as stated in a press release from the DHL Stormers.

“Willemse has made 97 appearances for the DHL Stormers since making his debut straight out of high school in 2017.

“He signed an unprecedented five-year contract in 2022, the same year he celebrated winning the Vodacom URC trophy with his teammates in Cape Town.

“Despite ongoing rumors and even some statements made as an April Fool’s joke, Willemse will not be considering any other offers, although it’s evident that many clubs globally are eager to secure the services of this double World Cup winner.”

This beloved athlete, Willemse, famously wore the jersey from the World Cup final during the trophy tour in the country where he faced New Zealand in the final, having played 39 Tests since his Springbok debut in 2018.
