Ange Postecoglou Responds to Criticism of Tottenham’s Penalty Controversy: From Golden to Garbage

ANGE POSTECOGLOU claims that critics of Tottenham revel in turning “gold into c**p” when they minimize the team’s achievements.

This is Postecoglou’s chance to transform a mixed season into success by advancing far in the Europa League and clinching the club’s first trophy in 17 years.

The Australian coach made further remarks about the ongoing narrative surrounding Spurs when asked about a penalty situation involving Brennan Johnson at the conclusion of Sunday’s 3-1 victory against Southampton.

Winger Johnson was eager to take a penalty he earned during injury time, aiming to net his first Premier League hat-trick for the club.

However, substitute Mathys Tel took the kick instead, cementing the 3-1 victory and leaving Johnson feeling let down.

Speaking with the media ahead of Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt, Postecoglou expressed his annoyance at how the incident was reported, stating: “We scored, we won. I’m delighted.

“It’s remarkable, it’s just . . . literally turning gold into c**p when it comes to Tottenham.

“Seriously. If we’re leading 2-1 against Frankfurt and given a penalty in the last minute, I want my best penalty taker to step up.

“One critique of this club has been its historical lack of winning. But the winning mentality in dying moments of a match is to score. We scored a goal.

“Yet, inexplicably, in this alternate dimension where Tottenham can do no right, it has been perceived as negative.

“I was delighted because, as I said, if we earn a penalty in the dying minutes that leads to a third goal, it can be crucial. I’m very proud of how the players handled that situation.”

Ange Postecoglou gives bleak update on Tottenham future even if he wins Europa League

This isn’t the first occasion that the beleaguered coach has taken issue with the narrative surrounding the club from the broader football community.

Recently, he voiced disappointment over the lack of support for Tottenham from pundits on television.

These commentators might argue that remaining positive about Tottenham is tough given their poor showing in the Premier League, currently placing them in 14th with 16 losses from 31 matches.

However, a significant opportunity lies ahead to change their fortunes with a chance at glory in Europe — pursuing the club’s first trophy since their triumph in the 2008 League Cup.

This would serve as an excellent means to demonstrate to critics that their negative perceptions have been unfounded throughout this challenging season.

Supporters of long-time rivals Arsenal did just that, echoing chants of ‘Are you Tottenham in disguise?’ towards Real Madrid during their impressive 3-0 victory over the Spanish team on Tuesday.

Despite this, Johnson, 23, emphasized: “My primary focus is on winning the Europa League for the sake of our players and staff.
