Controversy at Zanzou Nightclub: Congolese Bouncer Granted Bail of R10,000

Pretoria – A 41-year-old Congolese national, who was arrested in relation to disturbing viral video clips showing male patrons of Zanzou nightclub being coerced into committing lewd acts on themselves, has been granted bail set at R10 000 by the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

The individual, whose name cannot be disclosed at this time, is facing eight counts of compelled sexual assault and six counts of assault with grievous bodily harm.

The allegations are based on two separate case dockets filed against the suspect.

It is reported that in April 2022, the accused assaulted two victims involved in the case.

In another incident in January 2023, it is alleged that he forced four male individuals to engage in sexual acts on themselves.

This was brought to light when videos circulated on social media, prompting six complainants to file charges against the accused.

In his sworn statement, he requested bail, citing the need to provide for his three children and wife, and asserting that he has no prior or pending legal cases.

However, the prosecution opposed his bail request, arguing that he posed a flight risk and might attempt to avoid trial.

Additionally, the state noted that he lacked valid travel documentation, and his refugee status was still under review by the Department of Home Affairs.

Nonetheless, the district court concluded that the accused was legally present in South Africa and held a valid permit to be in the country.

In rendering the decision, the magistrate determined that releasing the accused on bail was in the interest of justice, with the condition that he must report to the Sunnyside Police Station every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Moreover, he was instructed not to leave the jurisdiction of Pretoria.

The case has been postponed to 5 May 2025 for further investigation.
