ACSA Implements Digitalization and Automation to Improve Air Cargo Efficiency
Antalya – In an effort to enhance global efficiency and competitiveness while streamlining trade processes, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is advancing its digitalisation and automation initiatives for air cargo.
During her address at the inaugural ICAO Global Air Cargo Summit in Antalya, Turkey, on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, ACSA CEO Mpumi Mpofu highlighted the necessity of simplifying and standardising data requirements across international borders.
“The digitisation of processes boosts efficiency, shortens turnaround times, and enhances accuracy – however, it is essential for governments to simplify cross-border documentation,” she stated.
Mpofu emphasised the vital role that air cargo plays in facilitating global trade and supporting various sectors, including e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, and advanced manufacturing.
She pointed out O.R. Tambo International Airport as a significant asset in South Africa’s cargo sector, where ACSA is investing in innovations such as automated storage solutions, AI-driven systems, and robotics to alleviate congestion and increase productivity.
O.R. Tambo International Airport Cargo has been honoured with the African Cargo Airport of the Year award five times since 2013.
Mpofu also underlined the necessity for customs integration, digital clearance systems, and risk-based processing to minimise delays at borders.
Furthermore, she highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships aimed at modernising cargo areas, enhancing supply chain visibility, and positioning key African hubs as regional leaders.
Emerging technologies such as blockchain and AI were recognised for their potential to improve the security and efficiency of cargo clearance processes.
“Blockchain fosters transparency and trust within the supply chain, while AI can facilitate inspections and automate risk detection,” Mpofu explained.
“The future of air cargo hinges on the adoption of smarter, cleaner technologies and strengthened collaboration among all stakeholders.”
Mpofu, along with ACSA’s Group Executive for Commercial and Business Development, Lauriette Sesoko, participated in a strategic engagement aligning with ACSA’s corporate strategy to Innovate, Grow, and Sustain.
ACSA noted that the summit provided valuable insights into global trends and technologies that could further enhance South Africa’s cargo operations.
