Maart Contemplates His Future with the Chiefs

Yusuf Maart, captain of the Kaizer Chiefs, has voiced uncertainty regarding his future with the team as his contract nears its end this season.

Maart made his move to the Chiefs in July 2022 from Sekhukhune United and has played 30 matches across all competitions this season, contributing two goals and three assists for the Glamour Boys.

The 29-year-old leader is set to guide the team in their upcoming clash against Soweto rivals, Orlando Pirates, at the FNB Stadium on Saturday at 15:00.

“For me, everything is in the hands of the Almighty,” Maart remarked. “No player, individual, or media personnel can foresee what the future holds.”

He continued, “Therefore, I place all my trust in the Almighty, ready to accept whatever comes my way.”

Sekhukhune, Maart’s previous club, is reportedly interested in re-signing him, as he showcased some of his best performances there, which led to his transfer to the Chiefs.

However, since his arrival at Naturena, Maart has faced some criticism from a section of Chiefs supporters, with a few expressing a desire to see him leave at the season’s end.

Nonetheless, the Chiefs seem eager to keep Maart around for the foreseeable future.

When questioned about his hopes to extend his stay at the club beyond this season, Maart responded, “It depends on what the Almighty has in store for me, not merely on my will. If the team presents a new contract, I will follow wherever the Almighty leads me.”

He added, “Given that I pray often, I trust the Almighty to guide me to where a valuable opportunity lies.”

Despite this, Maart did share his preference, saying, “Naturally, one aspires to play for a prestigious team. I’m already part of this one, so if they offer me a chance to remain, I will accept, as it’s an important team.”

He further articulated, “However, if other opportunities arise that feel right and present a challenge, I would consider pursuing them.”

“As I mentioned, if the Almighty opens doors where I need to make choices and assess my next challenge, I will embrace that.”

Since joining the Chiefs, Maart has featured in 90 matches across all competitions, scoring six goals and providing eight assists. Notably, he found the net against Pirates during the Soweto Derby in the 2022/23 season under coach Arthur Zwane.
