Riveiro Commends Mofokeng Following Soweto Derby Victory
Jose Riveiro, head coach of the Orlando Pirates, is running out of ways to praise the remarkable talent of Relebohile Mofokeng, declaring that the young player “brings joy to us all.”
Mofokeng played a key role in achieving a thrilling comeback victory for the Pirates, netting the pivotal goal in their 2-1 Betway Premiership win against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
With strong prospects for the PSL Footballer of the Season award, Mofokeng showcased a solid partnership with Deon Hotto before deftly placing the ball beyond Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.
This victory enabled the Pirates to recover after a challenging week, which included their elimination from the CAF Champions League semi-finals by Pyramids, along with a midweek defeat to Sekhukhune United in the league.
“Relebohile has been a beacon of joy for all Buccaneers since his arrival,” Riveiro commented on SuperSport TV following the match.

“The other players are also inspired by his contributions. It’s remarkable that we finished the match with six young players on the field, demonstrating the club’s growth and development. More positive changes are on the horizon for the team.”
Chiefs took an early lead in the second minute, with Glody Lilepo scoring from a first-time shot after receiving a pass from Dillan Solomons just outside the penalty area, surprising the Pirates fans.
However, the Pirates exhibited incredible resilience, leveling the score in the 23rd minute. Mohau Nkota delivered a defense-splitting pass to Evidence Makgopa, who skillfully slotted the ball past Bvuma.
This win marked the Pirates’ fifth consecutive victory over the Chiefs across all competitions. Riveiro has matched a record set by former Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter, who also enjoyed five successive derby wins during his initial stint with the Soweto giants.
Reflecting on the importance of the Soweto Derby, South Africa’s most beloved football match, the departing Riveiro highlighted its unique nature. “It’s something truly exceptional,” he stated.
“Wherever I go, it will be challenging to find a similar experience, as it’s a genuine celebration of football. I look forward to being part of more Derbies.”
“In any role I take, this particular event stands out, with fans gathering to watch the match harmoniously, celebrating the clubs and their rich heritage in South Africa.
“It’s something extraordinary that should be cherished forever. I’ve always strived to convey to people worldwide what it means to partake in this event; only by witnessing it do they truly grasp its significance. I hope more people are drawn to this remarkable occasion.”
The rivalry between these two Soweto giants will persist as they prepare to clash again in the Nedbank Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium next Saturday.
