Collision between Minibus Taxi and Double-Cab Bakkie Claims 15 Lives in Eastern Cape
Johannesburg – A tragic accident involving a white minibus taxi and an Isuzu double-cab bakkie occurred on the R63 between Adelaide and Maqoma in the Eastern Cape, leading to the loss of 15 lives, including both drivers.
The horrific incident took place on Saturday, May 3, 2025.
In light of the tragedy, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Transport Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa issued a joint statement on Sunday, May 4, 2025, extending their condolences to the bereaved families.
“Thirteen individuals from the Quantum, along with the driver of the Double Cab, tragically perished at the scene,” the statement revealed.
“Six passengers from the Quantum were promptly taken to Provincial Hospital, but sadly, two later succumbed to their injuries, raising the total fatalities to 15.”
“Both Creecy and Hlengwa are deeply saddened by this event, particularly following a successful Easter road safety campaign, and they wish for a swift recovery for those still hospitalized.”
“This tragic loss of life underscores the urgent need for road safety, a responsibility we all share.”
The department, in collaboration with the RTMC, is currently investigating the cause of the accident alongside SAPS and provincial authorities.
“A preliminary report is expected within 48 hours,” the statement concluded.
