Durban City Moves Closer to Promotion as Spurs Drop into Relegation Zone
Durban City, currently at the top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship, inched closer to securing direct promotion to the Betway Premiership with a commanding 3-0 win over JDR Stars at Soshanguve Giant Stadium on Sunday.
The Durban-based team now has 52 points from 27 league matches, holding a game in hand over second-placed Orbit College, who earned a slender 1-0 victory against Baroka FC at Olympia Park Stadium on Saturday.
Pogiso Makhoye’s squad is just three points behind the frontrunners, while Casric Stars ended Black Leopards’ eight-match unbeaten streak with a 2-1 win, moving to third place with 44 points as the chase for a promotional playoff spot intensifies.
Following their loss, Lidoda Duvha dropped to fourth place, currently level on points with Casric.
Notably, newly promoted Kruger United also shares 44 points and occupies fifth place after securing a 1-0 win against bottom-placed Leruma United at Kanyamazane Stadium.

In a mid-table contest, Milford ended a two-match losing streak against Brandon Truter’s struggling Upington City, while Highbury extended their winless streak to three matches with a 1-1 draw against Venda FC.
Truter’s team, known as Bafana Ba Gucci, has been without a win in their last eight matches, with their last victory occurring in February. Consequently, they now find themselves in a precarious 14th position with 29 points.
Meanwhile, Pretoria Callies have created some distance between themselves and the relegation zone with two consecutive wins, moving up to 10th place with 33 points after besting Hungry Lions 2-1, who have not tasted victory in their last four outings.
In the relegation fight, Cape Town Spurs fell to 15th place after suffering a 1-0 defeat to the University of Pretoria in the Mother City on Friday. With two matches remaining, the Urban Warriors are tied on 29 points with 13th-placed Venda FC and Upington.
