Amajita Secures Victory Against Sierra Leone in Thrilling AFCON U20 Showdown
The Suez Canal Stadium was filled with excitement on Tuesday evening as Amajita, South Africa’s U20 national football team, celebrated a standout 4-1 victory over Sierra Leone in the AFCON U20.
This triumph moves Amajita closer to the quarterfinals, with their important match against Zambia fast approaching.
Amajita showcased their skill early in the match, executing accurate passes that kept Sierra Leone’s defense on their toes.
Their perseverance paid off in the 14th minute when Jody Ahshene teamed up with Cape Town City’s Shakeel April to net the opening goal.
Despite Sierra Leone’s aggressive attempts, Amajita goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe made crucial saves to maintain the team’s advantage.


The first half wrapped up with Amajita leading 1-0, but Sierra Leone ramped up their efforts in the second half.
Nonetheless, Amajita held firm, extending their lead in the 60th minute when captain Neo Rapoo struck, assisted by Ahshene. Sierra Leone responded swiftly, narrowing the margin with a goal from their captain, Momoh Kamara, in the 70th minute.
Amajita coach Raymond Mdaka made strategic substitutions, introducing Patrick Autata, followed by Thabang Mahlangu and Langelihle Phili to strengthen his offensive play.
The arrivals of Mahlangu and Phili were pivotal, as Mahlangu scored twice in rapid succession—finding the net for the third goal in the 86th minute and sealing his brace in the 90th.
This victory places Amajita second in their group with six points, just behind group leaders Sierra Leone, who have seven points.
Although Sierra Leone suffered a defeat, they have already secured their place in the quarterfinals. Amajita’s final group match against Zambia is set for Friday, with hopes of advancing further.
With the top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-place teams, qualifying for the quarterfinals, Amajita looks well-positioned for advancement.
The team’s performance against Sierra Leone highlighted their potential, and they aim to maintain this momentum in their last group match.
