Moscow Metro Achieves Over 50% Drop in Crime Rate in the Last Ten Years

Moscow – In the past ten years, the Moscow Metro has reported a more than fifty percent decline in incidents on trains and at railway stations.

“This accomplishment stems from a combination of advanced technology, enhanced security measures, and collaborative efforts among different agencies,” said the Moscow Metro in a statement shared with The Bulrushes on Wednesday, (7 May 2025).

Several key factors contributing to the drop in crime on trains and at railway stations were identified by the Moscow Metro, including:

  • The creation of a dedicated Security Service accompanied by stringent inspection protocols
  • The active participation of the Moscow Government’s Departmental Security Service
  • The installation of over 90,000 surveillance cameras throughout the metro network
  • The launch of an advanced video analytics system called “Sphere”

Maksim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow and head of the city’s transport and infrastructure sectors, highlighted the essential role of modern technology and teamwork in this feat.

“Our experts oversee nearly every area of the Moscow Metro’s infrastructure using advanced cameras,” noted Liksutov.

“The cooperation between the Security Service and law enforcement, bolstered by modern technology, has established the Moscow Metro as one of the safest systems globally.

“We are dedicated to ensuring passenger comfort and safety in accordance with the vision of Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.”
