Riveiro Imposes Fines on Pirates After Player Exits

Jose Riveiro, the coach of Orlando Pirates, expresses optimism about the club’s future for the upcoming season, emphasizing that the team’s progress is part of a comprehensive strategy designed to attract the right successor.

Riveiro is set to leave the club at the conclusion of his three-year term, marked by significant advancements this season.

The Pirates are on pace to achieve their highest points tally under Riveiro, having accumulated 52 points in just 23 matches, following their 2-1 comeback victory against Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday.

In Riveiro’s first season, Pirates amassed 54 points, and they followed up with 50 points last season. With 52 points already secured and five matches left, they are well-positioned to exceed both previous totals in Riveiro’s final year.

Additionally, Pirates have advanced to the CAF Champions League semi-finals this season, marking a significant improvement after being eliminated in the preliminary rounds last year. This progress, combined with the chance to achieve yet another domestic cup double for the third consecutive year under the Spanish coach, highlights a continued period of success.

The departure of a successful coach often raises questions regarding the new manager’s strategy and the possible disruption to the team’s growth. New appointments may lead to significant changes in playing style and player personnel, which could jeopardize the momentum built under Riveiro.

“Did you catch my earlier response?” Riveiro replied when asked about continuity during the post-match press conference on Tuesday. “This initiative is a reflection of the club’s vision, not just Riveiro’s. I have addressed this question multiple times. The club has a clear direction. The right decision will be made.”

“They will receive the necessary support and will find a solid foundation to build upon as we near the season’s end. Football operates in cycles, and Orlando Pirates is a major institution; changes won’t happen solely because Riveiro is here or gone. The Buccaneers [Pirates fans] need not worry; the future is bright for the club and will surpass expectations.”

While the team has improved this season, it seems unlikely that Pirates will catch Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership title race as Sundowns are close to clinching their eighth consecutive league championship.

The Pirates now turn their attention to the Nedbank Cup final against Kaizer Chiefs at the Durban venue on Saturday, aiming for an unprecedented third straight victory in this tournament.
