Tragedy ensued when Ed O’Brien fell from a tree at Millennium Square.
The 23-year-old was quickly taken to the hospital and remains in a coma.
A JustGiving campaign has been initiated to support Ed’s courageous fight, raising an impressive £10,000, significantly exceeding the initial goal of £750.
Among the donations, one supporter commented: “Thinking of you. Strength and love!”
An Atlanta Hawks athlete, he is an ardent Leeds fan and part of the 49ers Enterprises group that owns the club.
Ed’s mother, Stacey Barker, remarked online: “As far as I know, he had been drinking, but I don’t believe he was excessively intoxicated as some have suggested.
“I also strongly believe that no other substances were involved.”
She noted that his recovery will be a “slow and lengthy process” with “complications expected along the way.”
The JustGiving page states: “To support Ed O’Brien and his family as he bravely battles for his life following a fall from a tree during the celebrations for Leeds winning the league on Monday.
“His parents reside in York, and this situation incurs significant travel and time off work expenses for them.
“Our goal is to raise funds to alleviate some of that burden. MOT stay strong, Ed.”
