Douglas Gibson, Renowned Former Democratic Alliance Leader, Passes Away at 82

Johannesburg – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of veteran Democratic Alliance (DA) member Douglas Gibson at the age of 82.

“On behalf of the DA, I wish to extend our sincere condolences to the friends and family of a truly remarkable South African, Douglas Gibson,” said party leader John Steenhuisen on Friday, (9 May 2025).

Douglas was a distinguished politician and public servant, renowned for his tenure as the Chief Whip of the Democratic Party and, subsequently, the Democratic Alliance in Parliament, as well as his role as South Africa’s ambassador to Thailand.

“The positions of Chief Whip and Ambassador truly reflect the essence of who Douglas was,” lamented Steenhuisen.

“He was a dedicated champion for freedom in South Africa, and even in his final days, he fought passionately for the values upheld by him and our party.

‘Moreover, he infused every undertaking with remarkable compassion, always demonstrating accessibility and humanity in all his interactions throughout his career.

“Furthermore, he represented our nation, our party, and the ideals of non-racialism and freedom with excellence.”

Steenhuisen remarked: “If anyone epitomized the finest qualities of our country, our party, and our cherished values, it was Douglas.

“His charm and intellect allowed him to forge connections with others and find common ground for collaboration.

“He will be deeply missed.

“As we persist in the struggle he championed so vigorously, striving for a better South Africa, we will work to honor his memory and the significant contributions he made throughout his life in building a nation of true freedom and vibrant opportunities.”

Though retired from active politics, Gibson remained a significant voice on developments within the DA, including its decision to collaborate with the African National Congress to form a Government of National Unity.
