Johannesburg – The Department of Home Affairs has announced that Nigerian Televangelist Pastor Timothy Omotoso, who was recently acquitted of rape and other charges amidst considerable public criticism, has been taken into custody to assist with his deportation from South Africa.

Pastor Omotoso, cleared of all 32 accusations, including rape, by Judge Irma Schoeman on April 2, 2025, was arrested early on Saturday, May 10, 2025, in East London, Eastern Cape.

Describing the arrest, Department of Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza remarked: “A law enforcement operation, led by the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, apprehended Timothy Oluseun Omotoso in East London this morning.”

Qoza further mentioned: “The arrest follows the Home Affairs Minister’s decision to deny Omotoso’s application under section 8(7) of the Immigration Act, which sought to contest the prior ruling that labeled him a prohibited person.

“The minister’s decision signifies that Omotoso is currently residing unlawfully within the Republic of South Africa and is thus liable for deportation.”

Previously, Pastor Omotoso had challenged his designation as a prohibited individual in court; however, the court ruled that his case should be sent back to the Department of Home Affairs for further consideration.

“Following a comprehensive re-evaluation, the minister reaffirmed the classification of Omotoso as a prohibited individual,” noted Qoza.

“To ensure compliance with the Republic’s laws, Omotoso is set for a court appearance on Monday, May 12, 2025, facing charges for violating provisions of the Immigration Act.”

The department stressed its unwavering commitment to uphold the rule of law impartially.

Pastor Omotoso’s arrest and forthcoming deportation come at a time when his acquittal continues to attract scrutiny.

In the recent hearings, Pastor Omotoso, leader of Jesus Dominion International church, along with his co-defendants, senior members Lusanda Solani and Zukiswa Sitho, faced allegations of enticing female congregants to their church, coercing them into sexual activities, and restricting their freedom of movement.

Pastor Omotoso, who had been denied bail, was finally released after a lengthy trial lasting eight years.
