Empangeni: 9 Dead in Crash Involving Tow Truck and Zion Christian Church Members’ Vehicle
Empangeni – It is with great sadness that we report the loss of nine lives in a tragic accident where a tow truck rear-ended a bakkie carrying members of the Zion Christian Church in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal.
“This Mother’s Day morning, around 06:47, I received disturbing news from our dedicated team at the Road Traffic Inspectorate about a horrific collision that resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, primarily mothers,” remarked Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma.
“The loss of a mother is an extraordinarily painful experience that brings significant change to a family’s life, filled with a range of sorrowful emotions.
“Initial reports suggest that the accident took place on the N2 Northbound, just after the Mthunzini Toll Plaza, involving a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1 that was transporting 24 members of the Zion Christian Church.”
The group was heading to Dukuduku, Umtubatuba.
“Information from the RTI and emergency rescue teams indicates that the tow truck struck the rear of the Hyundai H-1, leading to tragic fatalities and serious injuries.
“The injured individuals have been taken to hospitals, and we wish them a speedy recovery.
“We also express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the Church.”
MEC Duma added: “I have assembled a specialized team from my office to coordinate with the church and the affected families during this difficult period.
“Furthermore, I have instructed the RTI to keep in close contact with the Road Traffic Management Corporation to ensure a comprehensive investigation is conducted into this tragic incident.
“We will keep the residents of KwaZulu-Natal informed as more information becomes available.”
