Dramatic Incident at Melmoth Magistrate’s Court: Suspect Shot After Grabbing Official’s Weapon

Melmoth – A person under accusation was fatally shot at the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal after seizing a firearm from a court orderly.

Initial reports suggest that the accused somehow gained access to the weapon of a court orderly.

Another court orderly shot the accused before he could use the firearm.

In response to this violent event, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Development expressed profound concern regarding the tragic occurrence on the morning of Monday, 12 May 2025, at the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court.

The ministry added: “Preliminary reports indicate that an accused individual in custody allegedly managed to access a court orderly’s firearm.

“In a swift and effective manner, a second court orderly demonstrated commendable situational awareness, using his service weapon to fatally wound the accused before any additional harm could occur.

“The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

“As investigations into the incident continue—including the identity of the deceased and the precise sequence of events—the ministry praises the professionalism shown by court officials in this high-stress situation.

“Their actions indeed prevented a potentially more significant tragedy.

“The South African Police Service is carrying out a thorough investigation, and a detailed report is expected in due time.”

The ministry has initiated an internal review of security protocols in the courts.

Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has called for an urgent briefing and highlighted the immediate necessity to enhance security measures across all court facilities.

The ministry confirmed it is collaborating closely with law enforcement to ensure that improved safety measures are promptly implemented for the protection of all individuals using the courts.

“Despite this troubling incident, court operations at Melmoth continued seamlessly, with the regional court serving the public as scheduled,” the ministry noted.

“This underscores the resilience and dedication of the justice system and its officials in upholding the rule of law.”
