Grandmas Ready to Shine in Beauty Pageant

Johannesburg – The Sukuma Mbokodo Support Group, which aims to celebrate the resilience of Ekurhuleni’s senior citizens, is thrilled to announce a beauty pageant dedicated to them.

As per the organizers, this pageant is crafted to uplift and empower grandmothers and serves as a continuation of the Mother’s Day festivities.

The event will feature at least 16 Gogo’s from Ekurhuleni, who have been preparing for this beauty pageant set to take place at 11:00 on Tuesday, 13 May 2025, at Yende Street, Thokoza, also recognized as Kathorus Welfare.

Mama Dizzy Mbuli, the founder of the Sukuma Mbokodo Support Group and a passionate advocate for senior citizens’ welfare, noted that 120 elderly individuals and donors are invited to the fundraiser.

Mbuli highlighted that the beauty pageant is intended to inspire elderly women to maintain a positive self-image.

“Seniors should hold onto hope; many lie awake at night, concerned about whether they will see another day,” said Mbuli.

“I want them to know they are cherished by God; the elderly are essential to our communities.”

She expressed that these grandmothers play a crucial role in nurturing children, whether they are their grandchildren or the children of neighbors, and genuinely deserve recognition.

Mbuli shared her excitement for the event that aims to honor senior citizens, emphasizing that they deserve continuous love and appreciation.

“The event seeks to empower Gogo’s to be clean, strong, confident, and to hold their heads high,” she stated.

“I don’t want to see them perpetually scavenging for recyclable materials, which poses health risks. I want them to be valued and cared for due to their contributions to the community.”

Regarding the pageant, Mbuli pointed out that the top three contestants from the 16 will receive awards.

She also mentioned that approximately four individuals excelling in sewing projects from four regions of Ekurhuleni will be acknowledged.

“I am eager to host a successful event, as the proceeds will benefit our fund,” said Mbuli.

“We are dedicated to the well-being of our elderly population.”

“We invite everyone to join us, spend time with us, and express love to our elders.”

Mbuli encouraged the elderly to engage in regular exercise and maintain a healthy diet to help alleviate stress.

“In our organization, we promote social interaction among seniors; we hold weekly gatherings to provide a safe space,” said Mbuli.

“We have successfully uplifted and assisted many who encounter challenges at home, including abuse.”

Founded in 2018, the Sukuma Mbokodo Support Group also runs a soup kitchen for the elderly.

The organization provides comprehensive care for women, children, and the elderly from disadvantaged backgrounds.

It offers spiritual, emotional, physical, and educational support while nurturing a welcoming environment for the community.

Furthermore, it connects the elderly and their families with churches for ongoing support and care.

Other programs provided by the organization include a community soup kitchen, after-school care and tutoring, basic home-based care, chronic medication dispensing, sports for all ages, education on Gender-Based Violence, and family planning services.

Mbuli noted that these services are often conducted in collaboration with other community-based organizations engaged in social work.

“I aspire for the organization to grow and reach more individuals in need,” she concluded.
