Cardoso Aims for Champions League Glory Following Historic Title Victory
Following their impressive eighth consecutive Betway Premiership title win on Wednesday, coach Miguel Cardoso has called on his outstanding team to finish the season strongly by securing the CAF Champions League.
Sundowns reinforced their dominance in the league with a commanding 3-0 victory over Chippa United at Buffalo City Stadium on Thursday. This result made Orlando Pirates’ remaining three matches irrelevant in the battle for the title.
The goals for the Brazilians were scored by Iqraam Rayners in the first half, while substitute Arthur Sales added a brace in the second half. This victory marked their record-extending 15th league title in the PSL era and their overall 18th league championship.
With the domestic title secured, Cardoso, who stepped in as head coach in December after a slow start in the Champions League following the departure of Manqoba Mngqithi, is keen for his team to excel in the prestigious continental competition against Pyramids.
The critical two-legged semi-final is set for 24 May, with the return leg taking place in Egypt on 1 June.

“It’s truly incredible,” an enthusiastic Cardoso stated to SuperSport TV after clinching the title.
“Having been in Tunisia [with Esperance], I’m now here and have reached two Champions League finals [where Esperance lost to Al Ahly]. Let’s hope we can lift the trophy this season [in the Champions League]. This experience is remarkable and hard to believe.
“I want everyone to recognize that this achievement comes from hard work and steadfast dedication. Coaching at this level is thrilling yet challenging, especially considering the demands of South African football and the intense schedule. Nevertheless, it’s been exhilarating, and now it’s time to savor a few days before we return to preparing for the challenges ahead, which are just around the corner with much to accomplish.”
Sundowns will celebrate their league title victory against Stellenbosch at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Sunday.
Alongside the Champions League final, Sundowns are also gearing up for the prestigious FIFA Club World Cup next month in the United States.
