Momentum Key as Vodacom URC Pool Stages Wrap Up

The Vodacom Bulls, Hollywoodbets Sharks, and DHL Stormers represent South Africa in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship quarter-finals, all striving to gain vital momentum as the pool stage concludes this weekend. Meanwhile, the Emirates Lions aim to wrap up their season positively.

The Vodacom Bulls have a chance to clinch second place if they secure a victory in their final pool match, recognizing the importance of keeping their winning streak alive with a home quarter-final already guaranteed.

The Hollywoodbets Sharks are keen to surpass the Glasgow Warriors for third position, as the Warriors take on league leaders Leinster. The DHL Stormers are determined to maintain their fifth-place ranking for a smoother path to the Grand Final, should they be among the last two teams in the cross-hemisphere battle.

This weekend’s matchups kick off with the DHL Stormers facing Cardiff in Cape Town on Friday. A packed Saturday features the Vodacom Bulls against the Dragons in Pretoria, the Emirates Lions challenging the Ospreys in Johannesburg, and the Hollywoodbets Sharks clashing with the Scarlets in Durban.

The DHL Stormers are strong favorites against Cardiff, thanks to home advantage and a streak of three consecutive victories in the league. Their confidence is heightened after securing their quarter-final spot last weekend.

The Capetonians can take comfort in knowing the Welsh side has secured only three away victories this season. Yet, they must not underestimate their ninth-placed rivals, who still have a chance at the playoffs, particularly with seventh and eighth-ranked Benetton and Munster set to collide, while 10th-placed Edinburgh could also advance to the top eight depending on their match against Ulster and other results.

Interestingly, the DHL Stormers have secured just one more win than Cardiff this season. However, they will rely on their superior attacking and defensive statistics as they aim for their 10th victory in the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Vodacom Bulls face the struggling Dragons with high expectations, riding on a six-match winning streak and just one loss at Loftus Versfeld this season.

With an impressive 167 more points scored and 236 fewer points conceded compared to the Dragons over their 17 matches, the Bulls should feel confident as they seek their 14th victory in preparation for the quarter-finals.

However, the Pretoria team remembers the fierce effort the DHL Stormers put forth to secure a win against the same Welsh side last week, leading 14-0 at halftime.

The Emirates Lions are eager to end their season on a positive note against the Ospreys at Emirates Airline Park, having lost four of their last five Vodacom URC matches, the latest being a tough 32-19 defeat to the Scarlets.

They must remain wary of the Scarlets, especially after their commendable performance against the Hollywoodbets Sharks last week, where they trailed 14-3 at halftime but witnessed a determined second half from the Sharks conclude with a 29-10 victory.

Both the Lions and the Ospreys have accumulated seven round-robin victories, with the Ospreys ahead in offensive statistics, while the Emirates Lions boast slightly better defensive records, setting the stage for an exciting finale as they both conclude their seasons.

In Durban, the Hollywoodbets Sharks are motivated to secure a win against the sixth-placed Scarlets, but they must remain alert against the visitors, who are buoyed by a recent victory over the Emirates Lions. The Scarlets have narrowly lost four of their five away matches, alongside a draw, suggesting an intense matchup is imminent.

Nonetheless, the KwaZulu-Natalians are riding high with three consecutive wins—just one at home—and they recognize the need to elevate their performance from last week’s clash with the Ospreys to achieve their semi-final goals by the month’s end.

Reviewing the statistics, the Hollywoodbets Sharks aim for an outstanding performance; they have won three more games than their sixth-placed counterparts. Both teams have scored a total of 424 points over 17 matches, although the Sharks have conceded only 29 more points, highlighting the necessity for precision from the start to secure a win.
