Pirates Set Their Sights on Stellenbosch Star as Potential Free Agent Acquisition

Orlando Pirates is eyeing Sihle Nduli from Stellenbosch, with the player likely to join them next season.

Nduli has reportedly declined a contract extension from Stellenbosch, as his current agreement with Steve Barker’s team is set to expire at the end of the season.

This indicates that, if everything goes as planned, Nduli will move to Pirates as a free agent, making a transfer fee unnecessary for Stellenbosch.

Pirates’ interest in Nduli stems from his contributions as one of Stellenbosch’s standout players over the past two seasons, showcasing adaptability in multiple positions—mainly as a central midfielder, his preferred role, or stepping in as an emergency center-back. As the current season nears its end, the 29-year-old has made 42 appearances, netting one goal.

This solitary goal was crucial for Stellenbosch, securing their win against Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup second-leg quarter-final at Cairo International Stadium, following a defensive error by the champions.

Unfortunately, Stellenbosch’s campaign in the CAF second-tier tournament came to an end against Fadlu Davids’ Simba SC, resulting in a 1-0 aggregate loss in the semi-finals.

Nduli’s potential signing is timely as Pirates is set to part ways with midfielder Miguel Timm, whose one-year contract extension, triggered last season, will wrap up at the end of the current campaign.

Pirates does not intend to renew the contract of the defensive midfielder, who has seen limited play this season due to intense competition from Makhehleni Makhaula, Thalente Mbatha, and Phillip Ndlondlo.

These players will compete with Nduli in central midfield next season, as Pirates readies for the upcoming season under a new coach.

The weeks ahead promise to be dynamic for Pirates, who recently dismissed coach José Riveiro after three years at the helm of the Soweto Giants. Expectations of changes within the technical team are also present, as the new coach will likely bring in their own staff, a common practice in football.

Currently, Mandla Ncikazi has been named interim coach of Pirates until the season concludes.
