Protests, Tire Blazes, and Truck Looting at Diepkloof Interchange on N12

Johannesburg – The N12 at the Diepkloof Interchange is currently obstructed by protesters, with reports indicating that trucks are being looted.

In the early hours of Monday, demonstrators ignited tyres on the roadway.

Though the motive for the protest is still unclear, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police (JMPD) have cautioned drivers to avoid the vicinity.

“Motorists should be aware of the persistent traffic disruptions due to protest actions at the Diepkloof Interchange in Diepkloof,” said JMPD Spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla.

“Significant traffic delays are occurring and may worsen around the Diepkloof Interchange and surrounding areas due to ongoing road closures,” he added.

The following roads are CLOSED:

  • N12 Eastbound and Westbound at the N1 junction.
  • N1 Northbound and Southbound at the N12 junction.

Superintendent Fihla warned of hazardous driving conditions near the Diepkloof Interchange due to vehicles making U-turns and traveling against the flow of traffic.

“Please exercise extreme caution in this area,” he urged.

Superintendent Fihla mentioned that the JMPD is addressing reports of protests, along with additional reports of truck looting.

“Motorists are strongly advised to completely avoid the Diepkloof Interchange,” he urged.

“Consider taking alternative routes such as Rand Show Road and Golden Highway to circumvent the Diepkloof Interchange.”

“Do keep in mind that these alternative routes may also experience increased traffic and delays.”

“Plan your journey accordingly and allow for additional travel time.”
