Banyana Clinch Win Over Botswana in Thrilling WAFCON Warm-up Match
Banyana Banyana clinched a tight 3-2 win against Botswana in a friendly match held at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The current Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions managed to score all three of their goals in the first half, but Botswana staged a comeback in the second half that fell just short. Coach Desiree Ellis made tactical tweaks that improved Banyana’s performance.
Without Thembi Kgatlana, Ellis assembled a seasoned squad that included key players like goalkeeper Kaylin Swart, Bambanani Mbane, captain Refiloe Jane, and Jermaine Seoposenwe. Banyana showed their intent right from the start, taking a commanding lead with two early goals in the first half.

However, Botswana responded impressively with a stunning goal in the 41st minute. Sedilame’s long kick was not dealt with by Banyana’s defense, allowing Radiakanyo Lesego to score a brilliant half-volley that flew past a sprawling Swart, who was caught off her line.
Banyana seemed to ease off their initial intensity, which let a revitalized Botswana take advantage. Phenyoyaone Moloi intercepted a pass and managed to beat Swart, closing the gap to 3-2 for the visitors. This led to a tense second half for Ellis’s team, who had previously been in control. Nevertheless, with strategic adjustments to bolster their defense, Banyana held onto their lead and managed to prevent further threats from Botswana.
Banyana Banyana’s next challenge will be against Zambia on Tuesday, June 3. These matches are pivotal for Banyana as they gear up to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, with the tournament scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5-26.
