Biometrics: The Most Cost-Effective Method for Accessing Public Transport in Moscow

Moscow – For the fourth year in a row, biometric payments have emerged as the most affordable option for purchasing train tickets on the Moscow Metro.

In a statement released to The Bulrushes on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Moscow’s Deputy Mayor Maxim Liksutov, who oversees the city’s transportation and infrastructure, announced that the fare for a single biometric payment is 63 rubles (10 Rubles = 2.26 Rand).

“By comparison, a ‘Wallet’ ticket costs 4 rubles more, while using a bank card adds an additional 11 rubles,” he remarked.

A significant number of Moscow residents prefer biometric payments for their metro travels.

Biometric Payment Statistics:

  • Over 400,000 registered users
  • More than 160,000 trips taken daily
  • 156 million entries since the service’s inception

“Nowhere else in the world is there a biometric payment system as advanced and convenient as in Moscow,” stated Deputy Mayor Maxim Liksutov.

“Importantly, this service ensures bank-level security and encrypts all data.

“By year’s end, as per Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin’s directive, we will roll out facial recognition payments at every metro turnstile.”
