Bafana Suffer Defeat to Mozambique in COSAFA Cup Debut

Bafana Bafana’s campaign in the 2025 COSAFA Cup began on a disappointing note, enduring a 1-0 defeat to Mozambique at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Despite a strong start, the South African team could not convert their early chances, conceding a well-placed goal from Mozambique’s Antonio Sumbane in the 73rd minute.

Bafana Bafana kicked off with several scoring opportunities within the first 10 minutes.

Regrettably, they failed to capitalize, with Thakasani Mbanjwa making key saves to block attempts from Mozambique’s Antonio Sumbane and Baptista Francisco.

A corner kick from Kabelo Dlamini in the 23rd minute also went unanswered, as Victor Letsoalo and Aden McCarthy could not make contact.

In the second half, Bafana Bafana maintained their pressure on Mozambique’s defense, but faced strong resistance.

A potential own goal from Puso Dithejane was dismissed for offside in the 56th minute. Shortly after, coach Vela Khumalo introduced Mduduzi Shabalala to strengthen the midfield.

Mozambique’s Sumbane finally found the net with a precise shot in the 73rd minute, capitalizing on a rebound following Mbanjwa’s save of Keyns Abdala’s attempt.

In response, Khumalo brought on Boitumelo Radiopane, Wandile Duba, and Mokobelo Ramabu to enhance the attack.

The substitutes made an immediate difference, putting the pressure on Mozambique’s defense and earning a penalty in the 80th minute, though the referee reversed the decision after a VAR check.

Despite creating several chances in the dying minutes, Bafana Bafana could not find the back of the net, resulting in a 1-0 defeat to Mozambique. This loss calls for a quick regroup as Bafana Bafana gets ready for their next match against Zimbabwe at Toyota Stadium on Saturday at 15:00.
