African Union Cautions That Trump’s Travel Ban Could Strain Relations

The travel restrictions enacted by US President Donald Trump on seven African countries could negatively impact both economic and diplomatic ties, cautioned a continental organization.
On Thursday, Trump issued a proclamation restricting travel for foreign nationals from 12 nations, including Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, Somalia, and Sudan, claiming it was essential to reduce the threat of terrorist activities and safeguard public security.
The African Union voiced its worries about the potential negative impact of such actions on personal relationships, educational exchanges, business dealings, and the extensive diplomatic connections developed over many years, as highlighted by its executive branch on the social media platform X.
The organization called on the US to “consider taking a more cooperative stance and engaging in constructive discussions with the nations affected.”
According to Bilal Bassiouni, head of risk forecasting at advisory firm Pangea-Risk, reactions to the travel restrictions have been relatively subdued, and no affected governments have publicly expressed plans to retaliate against US commercial interests or personnel.
“Past experiences with travel bans show that these regions typically prefer bilateral diplomatic engagement rather than mutual restrictions,” he observed.
