Brown: Facing the Barbarians Is Our Greatest Challenge
On Monday, Springbok assistant coach Tony Brown emphasized that the Boks are approaching Saturday’s Qatar Airways Cup match against the Barbarians in Cape Town with a Test-match mentality, aiming to solidify a robust foundation for the upcoming season while progressing from their past successes.
After achieving an extraordinary second consecutive Rugby World Cup victory in 2023, the Boks recorded 11 wins out of 13 Tests in 2024. Brown noted that the coaching staff believes the team has a clearer understanding of their goals this year compared to the previous one.
This Saturday will be particularly important, as it will mark the first meeting between the Springboks and the Barbarians since 2016, and it will be the first time these teams clash on South African turf.
“This poses a unique challenge unlike any we have faced before, as they have already bested several top teams. It will be a valuable test for us as we begin the season,” Brown commented.
“For us, this feels very much like a Test match, so we need to perform to our highest standards, and our coaching methodologies must be on point to meet the goals we’ve set for the team.”

Discussing what to anticipate from the Barbarians, Brown remarked: “They are known for their attacking creativity and can be quite unpredictable. We must be ready and train diligently for this matchup.”
Cheslin Kolbe, named South Africa’s Men’s Player of the Year for 2024, expressed his excitement for the upcoming match.
“Although I haven’t faced them yet, I recognize that they are a formidable team with several experienced players. It’s vital for us to remain composed and prepare as thoroughly as possible,” Kolbe stated.
With rain in the forecast for Saturday, Brown acknowledged that it could influence the gameplay. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence in the Springboks’ ability to adapt to wet conditions if necessary.
“Playing an attacking brand of rugby in the rain is definitely more challenging, but we are a flexible team,” Brown said. “It might pose difficulties for the Barbarians given their style, but we trust our players know what’s expected of them.”
On a lighter note, Kolbe was thrilled to reunite with his teammates for the international season, saying: “It’s wonderful to be back. We haven’t gathered for six or seven months, so coming together as a group is invigorating. Plus, being in Cape Town feels like a home away from home for me; it’s always a joy to play in the Mother City.”
The Springboks will continue their training on Tuesday and Wednesday, take a rest day on Thursday for recovery, and finalize their preparations with a captains’ run on Friday.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 17:10 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
