Rio Tinto Collaborates with Hancock to Propel $1.6 Billion Iron Ore Initiative
Rio Tinto Group is partnering with Australia’s richest individual to create a $1.6 billion iron ore mine in the Pilbara region, boasting a capacity of 31 million tons annually.
The world’s second-largest miner will split development costs equally with Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting, as stated by Rio on Tuesday. The Hope Downs 2 mine will introduce two new pits and will connect with existing infrastructure. All necessary regulatory and environmental permits have been obtained, with initial ore extraction anticipated to start in 2027, the statement highlights.
“These efforts are in line with our strategy to continue investing in Australian iron ore and ensure sustained production in the Pilbara for decades to come,” said Simon Trott, Rio Tinto’s head of iron ore, in the announcement.

This new mine is part of Rio’s portfolio of projects designed to secure a reliable supply from the iron-rich region. The company has previously stated that launching a new large mine each year until the decade’s conclusion is vital to maintaining existing export levels.
