Cape Town City Demoted as Orbit College Ascends to New Heights
Sadly, Cape Town City has lost its PSL status after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Orbit College in the PSL Relegation and Promotion Playoffs at Olympia Park Stadium on Wednesday.
City needed a win or a draw in their crucial match in Rustenburg before their last mini-league game at home against Casric Stars on Saturday. Unfortunately, they fell short and failed to earn any points.
This outcome confirms Orbit College’s promotion to the Betway Premiership, as they gathered eight points from four matches, finishing six points ahead of both Cape Town City and Casric Stars. City and Stars will meet again on Monday in Cape Town, but it will be merely a formality.
Reflecting on City’s PSL Journey
Since taking over the PSL spot from Mpumalanga Black Aces before the 2016 season, City has had an impressive run in the top tier. During this period, they clinched both the Carling Knockout and MTN8 trophies and qualified for the CAF Champions League by finishing second in the league, along with the CAF Confederation Cup for their third-place finish.
Match Highlights and Defensive Issues
Although chances were scarce in the first half in Rustenburg, Orbit College dealt a significant blow to City’s aspirations. In the 49th minute, former City player Letsie Koapeng found the net from a cross by Gomolelo Khoto. Koapeng, who was part of City from January 2017 to May 2018, played on the squad that faced defeat in the MTN8 final against SuperSport United during Benni McCarthy’s first season.

City’s disappointing season, which saw them secure only seven wins in the Betway Premiership, ended in a 15th-place finish, leading to their involvement in the playoffs. Their struggles continued during the playoffs, where they managed to score just one goal in three matches up to this point.
They created little threat against Orbit College, who flourished with the backing of their enthusiastic home crowd. Coach Diogo Peral and his assistant Roger de Sa appeared disheartened on the bench, seemingly lacking in game plans.
Despite their ongoing difficulties, City nearly equalized in the final moments when Thami Mkhize’s close-range header sailed over the bar. Regrettably, that marked their last notable opportunity. With the final whistle, Orbit College celebrated their promotion, while City faced relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
