Lido DAO Supports Proposal for a Dual Governance Framework

Lido DAO has officially introduced Dual Governance, a significant enhancement that grants stETH holders increased authority over essential protocol decisions.
This announcement was made by Lido on June 30 through a post on X, following a successful vote by Lido DAO (LDO) token holders. The new governance framework is set to launch on-chain on July 4. Dual Governance features a dynamic timelock mechanism, enabling stETH holders to halt or delay proposals backed by LDO holders in case of disagreement.
The level of opposition is determined by the quantity of stETH staked in protest, with longer delays corresponding to larger amounts of opposing stETH. Proposals facing resistance from at least 1% of the total stETH supply will experience a timelock of 5 to 45 days. Additionally, if opposition reaches 10%, a “rage quit” mechanism will trigger, pausing all governance activities until the dissenting stakers exit the protocol.
This feature mitigates governance capture risks, ensuring that Ethereum (ETH) stakers maintain a voice in governance decisions they oppose. It addresses long-standing issues regarding the power imbalance between those actively staking ETH via Lido and those controlling LDO tokens.
Lido maintains that the new system functions as both a measure of dissent and a safeguard. Its configuration aims to prevent rash or harmful proposals from being implemented without providing stakers ample time to respond. Moreover, it offers a clearer exit strategy for those staking ETH with Lido if they disagree with the DAO’s direction.
The framework also incorporates several safety mechanisms, including a Reseal Committee for managing delays, a Tiebreaker Committee to settle deadlocks, and an Emergency Committee for urgent interventions.
In light of this update, the LDO token has not reacted positively; it has decreased by 2% in the past day and 13% over the last month, indicating market caution as the new governance structure is implemented.
Overall, the Dual Governance framework stands as one of the most advanced DAO structures within decentralized finance to date. By aligning incentives between stakers and token holders, Lido seeks to cultivate a more resilient and inclusive governance process for Ethereum staking.
