Mhlongo: A Message for the New Pirates Recruits
Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo has shared vital guidance for the club’s new recruits, highlighting the significant adjustments they will encounter as they join this prestigious team.
As the 2025/26 season approaches, Pirates has strengthened their squad with a series of new signings: Yanela Mbuthuma and Nkosikhona Ndaba (both from Richards Bay), Masindi Nemtajela (Marumo Gallants), Tshepang Moremi (AmaZulu), Sinoxolo Kwayiba (Chippa United), Tshepo Mashiloane (Baroka), Sihle Nduli (Stellenbosch), and Sipho Mbule (Mamelodi Sundowns).
Along with these fresh faces, the Pirates have also appointed a new head coach, Abdelsam Ouaddou, who takes over from Jose Riveiro.
Mhlongo was instrumental in welcoming these newcomers, joined by club legends like Tebogo Moloi, Edward Motale, and former captains Lucky Lekgwathi, Happy Jele, and Innocent Maela.
“Orlando Pirates is a prominent institution, so it is essential to pass on the legacy to the upcoming generation of players, allowing them to embrace the team’s culture,” Mhlongo expressed. “They need to understand their destination and the expectations that come with it.”

Mhlongo expanded on his involvement: “My connection with Pirates, while not in a coaching capacity, focuses on mentorship. I share my life experiences, including injuries and battles with depression. My goal is to assist players in meeting the club’s expectations.”
There have been questions concerning Sipho Mbule, who was unable to complete his loan at Sekhukhune United from Sundowns due to off-field matters last season.
His loan was cut short, and upon returning to Sundowns, his contract was not renewed.
Mhlongo, who endured significant public scrutiny during his time at Pirates, remarked, “Being part of such a large institution changes your life, bringing both challenges and rewards. It’s about how you cope with it. My responsibility is to equip them with resources and support, motivating them to seek help if they feel overwhelmed. I aim to encourage that openness and wish them the best with the team.”
The new signings are set to join the team for their pre-season tour in Spain, scheduled to play four matches from July 11 to 19.

Mhlongo made these comments in Durban on Tuesday while attending the Engen Knockout Challenge draw, scheduled for Kloof on Thursday and Friday.
