Tennis

Dayana quickly rose through the ranks in professional tennis, garnering admiration for her strong baseline play and assertive demeanor.

She grabbed headlines when she secured her first WTA title at the Hong Kong Open in 2018 at the young age of 18.

Since then, she has garnered three WTA singles titles and achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 21 in January 2020.

Her notable Grand Slam milestone occurred during the 2024 Australian Open when she reached the semi-finals.

However, her journey has not been without its challenges.

Ban scare

In 2021, she endured a temporary doping ban after testing positive for a banned substance.

Dayana upheld her innocence and was allowed to return to competition six months later when an independent tribunal determined that her positive result resulted from contamination.

Since that incident, she has diligently worked to reclaim her former ranking.

Fleeing war

In February 2022, she was compelled to leave her home with her sister due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The athlete from Odesa shared a heartfelt statement alongside her younger sister Ivanna, stating: “After spending two nights in the underground parking, my parents decided to send me and my little sister out of Ukraine at any cost.

“Mom, Dad, we love you dearly, take care of yourselves!! I love my country! Ukrainians, please take care of your lives.”

Choosing to pursue tennis despite her skills in swimming and gymnastics, Dayana later reunited in France with her mother Marina, while her father Ivan stayed in Ukraine.

Hidden talent

During the pandemic, Yastremska showcased her musical talent by releasing two singles.

Her tracks “Thousands of Me” and “Favourite Track” debuted in the summer of 2020, and she recently indicated that new music is on the way.

“I plan to release a new song in February,” she shared.

Grass allergy

One intriguing aspect of Dayana’s story is her allergy to grass, the very surface on which she competes at Wimbledon.

Despite managing this allergy, her determination and adaptability are highly commendable.

In June 2025, she made history as the first Ukrainian player in 17 years to reach a WTA Tour final on grass at the Nottingham Open.

She has openly discussed the discomfort caused by her allergy, yet also expressed her passion for competing on grass courts.
