Kriel Excited to Captain Boks in Tough Match Against Italy
Jesse Kriel is set to assume the position of South Africa’s 67th Test captain, spearheading the Springboks in their forthcoming clash against Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria this Saturday. Although he feels honored by this role, he cautions against underestimating the Italian team ahead of the match.
Both Kriel and Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick have shown significant respect for the Azzurri, anticipating that the opening match of the Castle Lager Incoming Series will prove to be more difficult than expected.
“Captaining the team in a Test match is an immensely significant experience,” Kriel stated. “There have been many highlights in my career, and this moment definitely ranks among the top, but we face a daunting challenge ahead. I’m grateful to have the support of leaders like Siya (Kolisi), Eben (Etzebeth), Handre (Pollard), and the entire squad.”

Kriel emphasized that the match would represent a true Test, despite the inclination of many analysts to underestimate Italy: “Overlooking them would be a serious mistake. They are a passionate nation with a capable team, and we hold them in high regard. We’ve trained rigorously this week and are bracing for a tough contest.”
Kriel added, “We intend to kick off the official Test season on a positive note and build a solid foundation for the future. We recognize how crucial a successful outcome is for our country, which serves as a significant motivator.”
Stick expressed his satisfaction with Kriel’s captaincy appointment, commenting: “His leadership was clear during the match against the Barbarians, making the choice to appoint him captain straightforward.”

Stick remained cautious regarding Italy’s potential threat: “Their backline is consistently dangerous, as we saw in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, featuring many talented players. Stick also looked forward to flanker Vincent Tshituka receiving his Springbok Test debut, affirming that his selection is well-earned.
