Ouaddou Steps Up: Addressing Fans’ Concerns

Abdelsam Ouaddou, the newly appointed coach of Orlando Pirates, recognizes the significant challenges ahead as he takes on the role with the Soweto Giants.

He is conscious of the doubts surrounding his qualifications.

Ouaddou, who took over from the esteemed Jose Riveiro at Pirates last month, disclosed that he had engaged with the club’s board five times during the interview process, escalating the pressure to deliver results swiftly.

His appointment, especially after a brief tenure with Marumo Gallants that concluded last season, came as a surprise.

He steps into an Orlando Pirates squad that achieved considerable success under Riveiro, winning five trophies over three seasons. Riveiro also led the team to three second-place finishes behind Mamelodi Sundowns and a semi-final finish in the CAF Champions League last season. With Pirates having narrowly missed out on the league title from Sundowns three times, there are high expectations for Ouaddou to elevate their performance.

“Delivering results is essential,” Ouaddou stated. “I am aware that joining such a prestigious club comes with high expectations. We are embarking on a five-year journey, and the fans expect victories and accomplishments. We fully understand the implications and the ambitions of the board.”

Valuing Competence Over Experience: Ouaddou’s Viewpoint

Considering the unexpected nature of his selection, Ouaddou is prepared for skepticism regarding his expertise, despite having secured a league title with AS Vita Club in the 2023/24 season—a significant achievement in contrast to Riveiro’s history with the club, which began in 2022 without any prior trophies.

“I recognize the doubt, though I try not to focus on social media or public opinion, which might be something I should pay attention to,” he reflected. “People might wonder, ‘What has this coach achieved? He lacks experience; how can he manage a club of this stature?’”

Ouaddou emphasizes the importance of competence over just experience. “I believe in valuing competence over mere experience. A coach could have been in the game for two decades without any significant achievements. Conversely, a young, passionate coach eager to succeed may be the right fit. Similarly, a seasoned player with vast experience may not always be impactful, while a talented young player could be the key to winning the league. The ongoing debate about experience versus competence can be confusing.”

Embracing Positive Pressure at Orlando Pirates

The former Fulham midfielder remarked, “This is undoubtedly a considerable challenge, and I see it as a well-structured club. We are stepping into a new chapter, and the team is poised for growth. Last season had its successes, and we must commend coach Riveiro for his excellent leadership.”

“I am thankful for the board’s backing and appreciate their vision. We are starting what could be a five-year initiative concentrated on winning, and I am fully ready for that challenge.”

Regarding the inevitable pressures, Ouaddou perceives them positively. “Pressure is a constant; even stepping out your door involves some form of pressure. Nonetheless, this pressure is invigorating—an exciting challenge considering the passionate supporters and skilled players. My goal is to bring them joy, even though the journey may not always be easy.”
