President Ramaphosa Declares Category 2 State Funeral for David Mabuza
Pretoria – President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared that former Deputy President David Dabede Mabuza will receive a State Funeral Category 2.
The former deputy president passed away at the age of 64 on Thursday, 3 July 2025, following a brief illness.

Mabuza’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, 12 July 2025.
As per the State, Official, and Provincial Official Funeral Policy Manual of The Presidency, a State Funeral Category 2 is reserved for the Deputy President of the Republic, an Acting President, and Former Deputy Presidents.
This type of state funeral includes specific military ceremonial honours.
The funeral service for Former Deputy President Mabuza will be held in Mpumalanga.

In preparation, President Ramaphosa has declared a period of National Mourning from tomorrow, Monday, 07 July 2025, until the evening of Saturday, 12 July.
During this period, the National Flag is to be flown at half-mast at all flag stations throughout the country.
While attending the BRICS Summit in Brazil, President Ramaphosa extended his “deep condolences” to the Mabuza family.
“The President offers strength to the family as they and the nation commemorate the life of an activist, educator, intellectual, and leader who played a vital role in our freedom and development,” stated Vincent Magwenya, Spokesperson to the President.
