Ellis Commends Banyana’s Strong Opening Performance at WAFCON
Desiree Ellis, the head coach of Banyana Banyana, expressed her excitement following her team’s victory over Ghana in the opening match of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
In the Group C contest held at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco, on Monday evening, Linda Motlhalo converted a penalty, and Jermaine Seoposenwe scored, securing a first-half win for Banyana Banyana.
Ellis underlined the significance of starting strong in any tournament.
“It was a fantastic start; we learned that lesson back in 2018,” she remarked.
“In any competition, achieving a positive result in the opening match is critical. A strong start sets a positive tone for what’s to follow.”

“While group dynamics may be beyond your control, effective player management is crucial. Recognizing the strength of your bench is essential for making strategic decisions.”
On the match details, Ellis shared her observations.
“Ghana started well, making it tough for us to establish our rhythm during the first 15 minutes,” she noted.
“However, we found our groove, and although I didn’t see the foul, I acknowledge it occurred in the box.”
“The timing of our second goal was crucial, and we had chances to score more as we created numerous opportunities.”
“Overall, our robust defensive performance limited their goalkeeper’s chances to intervene. The substitutions we made were well-timed and contributed to stabilizing the team.”
Ellis also recognized Ghana’s skills, stating, “We must honor Ghana; they are a strong team. The first 15 minutes could have shifted the game. If they capitalized during that time, the outcome might have been different.”
With this victory, Banyana Banyana leads Group C with three points, sharing the top position with Mali, who triumphed over Tanzania 1-0 on Monday.
The defending champions will take on Tanzania on Friday at the Honneur Stadium, aiming to sustain their momentum and create a significant impact in the tournament.
