National Consumer Commission Announces Recall for VW Golf, Volvo, and Hino Cars
Johannesburg – Several vehicles, including the VW Golf (TSI and GTI), Volvo (XC90), and Hino (500 Series SKD and Hino 500 CBU Series), have been recalled due to various concerns.
On Tuesday, 8 July 2025, the National Consumer Commission (NCC) announced the receipt of recall notifications from Volkswagen of South Africa (VWSA), Volvo Cars South Africa, and Toyota South Africa Motors (PTY) Ltd.
Recall of Volkswagen Golf TSI and GTI
VWSA is recalling 159 Golf 8 R2.0 TSI 7 speed DSG 235 KW and Golf 8 GTI 2.0 TSI 7 speed DSG 180 KW vehicles sold between 16 April 2025 and 30 June 2025.
This recall addresses a defect in the front passenger seat belt.
According to VWSA, there is a risk that the seat belt on the front passenger side may not be properly secured to the lower anchoring point due to an issue in the sewing process.
If the lower anchoring point of the belt is not securely attached, the safety function of the seat belt may be significantly compromised.
In the event of an accident, this could result in severe or fatal injuries to the occupant in the front passenger seat.
Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid Recall
Volvo South Africa has also notified the NCC about the recall of 26 XC90 plug-in hybrid vehicles from the 2025 to 2026 model years.
The braking system may become temporarily inoperative when using ‘B’ mode (in plug-in hybrid vehicles) or One Pedal Drive (in fully electric vehicles) after descending a hill for an extended period.
This may lead to a crash, posing serious safety risks to both occupants and others on the road.
Recall for Hino 500 Series SKD and Hino 500 CBU Series
Toyota South Africa has informed the NCC of a recall involving a total of 6,662 Hino 500 SKD series and 77 Hino 500 CBU series vehicles.
These vehicles were manufactured from 11 May 2017 to 14 December 2023, and from 31 May 2018 to 25 December 2024, respectively.
The supplier has reported that an incorrect cage bolt spanner was supplied with the Hino 500 SKD vehicles, while the Hino 500 CBU series lacks this tool completely.
Although the parking brake will still operate during a vehicle malfunction, releasing it will not be feasible due to the incorrect and absent tools supplied.
“The NCC has noticed a recent rise in motor vehicle recalls and associated components and is actively collaborating with affected suppliers for further information to determine the necessary actions to remedy this situation,” stated Acting Commissioner Mr. Hardin Ratshisusu.
“Meanwhile, consumers with affected vehicles are strongly advised to promptly arrange for an inspection of their vehicles at their nearest approved dealerships, at no cost.”
