Biyela Confident in Top Four Prospects, Aware of CAF Obstacles
Despite having one of the youngest teams in the PSL, Richards Bay chairman Sifiso Biyela is hopeful about the team’s prospects for a top-four finish next season. However, he pointed out that the club is not yet fully prepared to compete in CAF club competitions.
At a recent event on Tuesday, where new signings such as Gabadinho Mhango, Thabani Zuke, and Lindo Mtshali were introduced, Biyela remarked that Richards Bay could have realistically finished in the top four last season. He underscored the importance of not losing critical points in key matches against Stellenbosch and SuperSport United.
Looking Back on Last Season’s Achievements and Missed Opportunities
This past season, Richards Bay goalkeeper Salim Magoola distinguished himself with an impressive record of 10 clean sheets in 19 matches. This defensive prowess was crucial in securing the Natal Rich Boyz’s best finish ever, placing eighth with 33 points from 28 games.
As they look forward, Richards Bay is gearing up for a much-anticipated MTN8 quarter-final showdown against reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns next month.
Biyela, known for his proactive leadership, confidently stated that a top-four finish is attainable. “The top four is possible,” he asserted. Reflecting on their recent away draw with Stellenbosch, he noted, “We drew with Stellenbosch 1-1 after leading the match. They earned a penalty, and while I’m not disputing the decision, we were careless in allowing them to equalize. Those were two critical points lost that could have brought us to 35 points.”
Biyela expressed his disappointment regarding yet another crucial match: “Then we move on to the game against SuperSport United at Kings Zwelithini Stadium. We essentially gave away three points. We even missed a penalty, which was unnecessary. When combined with other missed opportunities, that would total 40 points. Just think about it; we could currently be sitting in third place,” he said, eliciting laughter from those present.
While comparing their situation to a rival’s successes, Biyela remarked, “Look at Stellenbosch, who finished third last season. What I’m saying is that achieving this is possible; it’s not just a pipe dream. We can make it happen. We are dedicated to improvement and have identified the mistakes we made last season. Our aim is to correct those discrepancies this time around.”
Highlighting Local Talent and Preserving Tradition
Despite the departure of significant players like Nkosikhona Ndaba and Yanela Mbuthuma to Orlando Pirates following their impressive top-eight finish, Richards Bay proudly retains a roster largely composed of players from the northern region of KwaZulu-Natal, their home ground.
This strong regional connection was the reason Biyela turned down a substantial R70 million offer from Cape Town City’s John Comitis, whose team faced relegation last season. Biyela firmly believes that a legacy cannot be bought, especially considering the hard work involved in reaching the upper echelons of the PSL.
“The club’s legacy is invaluable; it cannot be measured in monetary terms, as that would diminish the heritage we’ve built,” Biyela stated. “I may not have R72 million, but that’s not something I yearn for. How could a club spend five years absent from Richards Bay, and when it finally returns, the community discovers it has been sold? What would that leave for me? I’d end up in Jozi permanently; where would I belong?”
“Just consider the implications of accepting a R70 million offer and shutting down; if that were to occur, I would be turned away if I ever sought help in the future because I’d be labeled as ‘gone rotten’,” he added.
Biyela emphasized the club’s deep-rooted ties to its community: “What I want to convey is how much we cherish this club. It doesn’t merely belong to us; we are stewards for the people of King Cetshwayo and Umhlathuze. This club is the community’s, and we take immense pride in representing them and putting Richards Bay on the map. Now, everyone is aware of us.”
