Xander Schauffele: The Open Champion Shares Trophy Location Confusion and a Disturbing Incident Involving His Wife

Last year’s OPEN champion, Xander Schauffele, celebrated his victory by enjoying tequila from the Claret Jug and indulging in a large Cuban cigar.

Despite this, the Californian, whose performance has waned since clinching his second Major title at Troon last year, doesn’t fit the mold of a typical bold American.

At 31, Schauffele confessed that he doesn’t showcase any of his 12 professional trophies at home and currently has no idea where his Olympic gold medal is. He expressed annoyance over his wife’s decision to hang a photo of his 2021 Tokyo victory in their gym.

As he gears up to defend his title at Portrush this week, he stated: “I don’t have any trophies at my house. They’re likely at my parents’ home or stored in a bank vault.”

“I rarely entertain guests, so what purpose does having them displayed serve?”

“I don’t want to walk into a trophy room and think, ‘Look how successful I am’. That attitude has stayed with me since childhood.”

“Honestly, I have no idea where my Olympic gold medal is.”

“What use does it have for me?”

“My wife has put up a few pictures in the gym celebrating my Olympic medal, but they’re hung too high for me to see.”

“I’d need a ladder to view them, which is quite frustrating.”

“If she were to display a photo of me in a Masters Green Jacket (which Schauffele has yet to win), that would really bother me.”

“That would definitely serve as extra motivation. I wouldn’t want to see that image.”

“I’d prefer a photo of my dogs on the wall or perhaps a clock. I’m often late, so a clock might be useful.”

While the two-time Major winner Schauffele did admit to sipping tequila from the Claret Jug, he insists that he doesn’t celebrate in the same way as the locals do along the Northern Irish coast.

He noted: “I’m a bit embarrassed to admit I took a sip of tequila from it while on vacation in Portugal — but not with salt and lime, as the lid hardly opens.”

“I’ve had a bit of wine from it, but not excessively. I’m not a heavy drinker.”

“To be honest, I celebrated more after several championships last year.”

“But I’m not Irish, and I understand that celebrations here tend to be more elaborate than what I’m used to!”

“In my fashion, I celebrated with a cigar shared with my family. I also made a few phone calls. It was a lovely celebration.”

“Afterward, we quickly transitioned to the Olympics. It seems like realigning with one event leads straight into the next.”

“It’s unfortunate that I have to relinquish the trophy this year. I’m looking forward to the chance to reclaim it.”
