Sundowns Star Excels at FIFA CWC, Wins Prestigious Award

Lucas Ribeiro Costa of Mamelodi Sundowns has been honored with a prestigious award at the recently held 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, surpassing renowned talents such as Argentinian icon Lionel Messi and German star Jamal Musiala.

The 26-year-old Brazilian forward played a crucial role in Masandawana’s journey, providing an assist in their opening clash against South Korean champions Ulsan HD, but it was his remarkable performance against Bundesliga powerhouse Borussia Dortmund that truly captivated audiences.

Ribeiro seized the ball in his own half, skillfully evaded two Dortmund defenders, and deftly slotted it past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Despite his valiant effort, Dortmund secured a thrilling 4-3 win, mesmerizing fans across the globe.

His brilliant goal earned him a nomination for the FIFA Club World Cup goal of the tournament, and after weeks of voting online, Ribeiro emerged victorious with over 40,000 votes.

In addition to international recognition, Ribeiro is in contention for the PSL Footballer of the Season and Player’s Player of the Season awards in the South African premier league, competing against Orlando Pirates’ rising star Relebohile Mofokeng and revitalized Sekhukhune United winger Keletso Makgalwa.

The standout player for the Tshwane giants finished the Betway Premiership season as the leading goal scorer, tallying 17 goals and providing 12 assists, with remarkable performances against Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

Furthermore, Ribeiro is nominated for the Betway Premiership goal of the season award, particularly for a stunning solo goal during a vital 4-1 triumph against then-title challengers Pirates in February.

These notable accomplishments have reportedly piqued the interest of Turkish Superlig club Trabzonspor, Qatari side Qatar SC, and Brazilian clubs Cruzeiro and Fluminense. However, no transfers have been confirmed at this time.
