Four Suspects in DJ Sumbody’s Murder Unveiled in Court and Remain in Custody

Johannesburg – Authorities have apprehended four suspects in connection with the murder of Oupa John Sefoka, widely recognized as “DJ Sumbody,” which took place on 20 November 2022. The individuals stood before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.

On Tuesday, 22 July 2025, during a highly anticipated court session, the defendants were named as 55-year-old Michael Pule Tau, 61-year-old Katiso Molefe, 45-year-old Tiego Floyd Mabusela, and Musa Kekana, whose age has not been disclosed.

According to Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Gauteng, the suspects were arrested for the murder of Oupa John Sefoka, also known as DJ Sumbody, in Woodmead.

“Mabusela and Kekana were previously in custody for separate charges relating to the attempted murder of Tebogo Thobejane when they were linked to the current allegations,” Mjonondwane elaborated.

“The accused are suspected to be hitmen, with one allegedly orchestrating Sefoka’s murder during the commission of the crimes.

“This shooting resulted in the fatalities of Sefoka, Sibusiso Walter Mkoena, and Sandile Shawn Myeza.”

Two of the victims died at the scene, while the third was hospitalized and later passed away.

The charges against the accused include three counts of murder, plus illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The case has been adjourned to 29 July 2025 to allow the State to complete profiling the accused, who have sought bail.

“In addition, the State has announced another suspect in the attempted murder case of Thobejane,” Mjonondwane noted.

Nthabiseng Nzama, now designated as accused number five, is alleged to have facilitated monetary transfers with knowledge that the funds were sourced from criminal activities.

She made her initial court appearance, where bail was set at R10,000.

Her case has been postponed to 26 August 2025, in alignment with the proceedings of her co-defendants.

WAS PRESENT DURING ARREST: Patriotic Alliance Johannesburg leader Kenny Kunene was at Katiso Molefe’s residence, one of the murder suspects, when police conducted the arrest.

Meanwhile, Kenny Kunene, who has recently attracted attention for inspecting abandoned buildings accommodating undocumented foreign nationals, is now encountering legal challenges of his own.

The leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA) Johannesburg was present at the residence of Katiso Molefe, a suspect in the murder case, when police arrived to execute the arrest.

ARRESTED: Katiso Molefe, a businessman based in Sandton, is among the four suspects arrested related to DJ Sumbody’s murder.

Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Johannesburg Caucus Leader, has called for Kunene’s resignation from his MEC position.

“Kunene’s role as MMC for Transport is completely untenable, especially after being found at the residence of a murder suspect during the police operation,” Kayser-Echeozonjoku stated.

“The DA insists on Kunene’s immediate departure, and if he refuses, Mayor Dada Morero must dismiss him.

“The absurd explanation Kunene provided on ENCA this afternoon should be unequivocally dismissed by any reasonable citizen of South Africa.

“No, Kenny, you weren’t at a murder suspect’s home to ‘drive a journalist there’.”

Kunene, previously convicted in 1997 for running a Ponzi scheme that resulted in a six-year sentence, claimed he was at Molefe’s house to escort a journalist for an interview.

Kayser-Echeozonjoku refuted his claims: “The Patriotic Alliance continues to reveal itself as an organization that fails to prioritize the needs of South Africa.

“It has become a self-serving entity that aligns itself with crime and corruption.”
