Manager Regis Le Bris is looking to have the experienced Swiss midfielder lead the team in their fight for Premier League survival and is prepared to offer him a three-year contract.

However, Sunderland is encountering stiff competition from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Fenerbahce as they pursue this ambitious transfer.

Nonetheless, Xhaka is committed to joining Sunderland and has already settled on personal terms to move to the Stadium of Light.

The next step involves both teams agreeing on a transfer fee, with Leverkusen aiming to secure closer to £15m.

Xhaka’s agent, Jose Noguera, stated: “We’ve reached a preliminary agreement with Sunderland.

“Granit is excited about returning to the Premier League. Sunderland intrigues him – he is ready for this challenge.

“We hope that Leverkusen will honor his desire to leave and that the two clubs can finalize an agreement soon.”

Xhaka’s contract with Leverkusen extends until 2028, and he is on the verge of becoming Sunderland’s seventh summer signing.

Xhaka spent seven years with Arsenal after moving from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016.

During his time at the club, he won the FA Cup twice and made nearly 300 appearances for the Gunners.

Granit Xhaka reveals the reason behind his dramatic new look, having undergone a hair transplant.

Following his move to Leverkusen in 2023, he played a crucial role in their significant achievements in both the Bundesliga and the German Cup that year.

Last season, he participated in an impressive 49 matches, aiding the team in finishing second, just behind Bayern Munich.
