Impala Boosts Platinum Production in Zimbabwe with New Smelting Plant

Impala Platinum Holdings’ Zimbabwean division is notably enhancing its processing capabilities in the region and plans to handle concentrates from other mining firms at its new smelter.

This facility, a vital part of Zimplats Holdings’ $1.8 billion expansion project, features an annual processing capacity of 380,000 tons of concentrate, as highlighted by Zimplats Chair Thandi Orleyn during the smelter’s commissioning ceremony in Selous, situated 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Harare, the capital. The leading platinum producer has already allocated $1.1 billion of its 10-year investment strategy, which runs through 2031, she noted.

The plant “is strategically designed to manage feeds from both existing and future PGM producers,” she remarked, referring to platinum group metals recognized for their resistance to corrosion and heat, as well as their catalytic abilities.

This expansion reflects a wider trend across Africa focused on increasing the value of natural resources prior to export. Many mining operations on the continent have faced interruptions or takeovers due to disputes with governments over taxes and investments, as illustrated by Barrick Mining Corp’s Loulo-Gounkoto gold complex in Mali. In Zimbabwe, a significant challenge for producers has been the central bank’s retention of foreign currency from exporters.

Orleyn conveyed to Bloomberg during the ceremony that the company has raised issues with Zimbabwean officials concerning the instability of the nation’s currency.

“There is a common understanding that this is a long-term partnership, and the current currency instability amidst the existing geopolitical landscape is something we should expect,” she stated.

The Southern African nation possesses the third-largest platinum reserves in the world, just behind Russia and South Africa.

Zimbabwe derives more than half of its revenue from mineral exports, which include gold, chrome, and diamonds.
