Exciting MTN8 Semifinal Concludes in Stalemate Between Pirates and Sundowns
What an exhilarating match! On Saturday, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns faced off in a gripping MTN8 first-leg semifinal at the lively Orlando Stadium, concluding in a dramatic 1-1 draw.
Yet, Sundowns might feel fortunate to come away with a draw. They withstood significant pressure during the second half, with the goalpost and several remarkable saves from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams thwarting Pirates’ efforts.
This outcome follows Pirates’ recent achievements against Sundowns in this tournament, having secured victory in four of their last five matchups, including the final of the 2023/24 season.
From the outset, both teams displayed their talent, reinforcing their contender status for this season’s title. Pirates made several key changes to their starting lineup, with Evidence Makgopa, Deano van Rooyen, and Thalente Mbatha all receiving their first starts. In contrast, Sundowns continued to cope without Khuliso Mudau and Lucas Ribeiro Costa.
A crucial moment transpired when Sundowns captain Themba Zwane was carried off on a stretcher in the 15th minute due to what seemed to be a groin injury. His early exit posed a significant challenge to Sundowns’ attacking prowess, and Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos will be anxiously monitoring updates on his status ahead of the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria.

Sundowns drew first blood in the 36th minute when Teboho Mokwena leaped high to expertly head in a corner from Marcelo Allende. Shortly thereafter, they almost doubled their lead, but Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine pulled off a critical save to deny Tashreeq Matthews from close range.
When the teams returned for the second half, Pirates emerged with renewed vigor, putting substantial pressure on Sundowns, striking the woodwork and crafting multiple clear-cut chances.
Their persistence bore fruit in the 87th minute when Mbekezeli Mbokazi took advantage of a defensive error and provided an assist to Kamogela Sebelebele, who adeptly slotted the ball past Ronwen Williams to equalize.
With the first leg concluding in a draw, the upcoming return leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium next Saturday will be critical. Sundowns are aware that a goalless draw would see them through to the final, while Pirates must score at least two goals to advance.
