More Thunder has proven capable at this level after his hard-fought win in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket. His last outing in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot, where he finished strongly in second, suggested that six furlongs may be on the short side for him. He has demonstrated he is more than a mere handicapper throughout the season, starting with two impressive wins at Newmarket. He’s fully prepared for this challenge.
CRACKING GOLD (3.00 Newbury, nb)
Is set to shine for Clive Cox. He has exhibited remarkable form this season and seems tough to defeat. Below, I’ll evaluate all the competitors in this race.
SECRET GUEST (3.20 Ripon, treble)
Is poised to excel in the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap. He achieved an impressive third-place finish in this event last year under trainer Bryan Smart, who has allowed him some rest after a solid second at Thirsk. The five-year-old returns just 3lb above last year’s rating, and with his rider’s claim, this balances out nicely. He has a favorable draw in stall 11, meeting all the requirements for this competitive event.

PINHOLE showcased more than just handicap potential when dominating at Ascot recently.
This was merely his third outing for Ralph Beckett, and he surged ahead over 1m4f, suggesting this distance might lead to more improvement.
He deserves another chance at this higher level.
Epic Poet struggled with the 1m4f distance in the Hardwicke at Royal Ascot after a near miss in the Yorkshire Cup, but he should perform better at this distance.
Nightime Dancer finished behind the promising Scandinavia last time here and should find this contest more manageable.
Candleford has a Listed victory this season but needs to bounce back from a lackluster outing at Goodwood recently.

RHYTHM N HOOVES exhibits promise. Robert Cowell’s speedster appeared to return to form when finishing strongly in second in a competitive sprint at Ascot last month.
He’s well-placed from just 2lb higher, thrives on fast ground, and can deliver a late charge with Billy Loughnane on board.
A genuinely-run race could see him overpower tired competitors in the final stretch.
Getreadytorumble poses a considerable threat after a series of commendable performances at this distance, while Glamorous Breeze has the class to capitalize on any opportunities that arise.
Sugar Hill Babe, starting from stall one, may set an early pace but could pave the way for the selected horse.

I have a solid bet lined up at Newbury.
CRACKING GOLD (3.00, nb) was an outstanding winner here two runs back before finishing strongly contested at Goodwood. He is primed for further progress for Clive Cox.
Classic, Consolidation, and Leadman are likely to be the main competitors.
Here’s my analysis of the field, rated from one (worst) to five (best) stars:
CRACKING GOLD 5
Top star. Demonstrated premium form with a strong second at Goodwood in a large field last time. Ideal for pace and distance, adaptable to any conditions, and performs well fresh. His consistent and progressive profile makes him the one to beat.
HAVANA PUSEY 2
Potential underachiever. Prefers to be near the front and performed well in a recent Group 3 after previous handicap victories at this distance. The track and ground suit her, but improvements are vital following her last outing at Goodwood.
CLASSIC 4
Strong case. Thriving this summer with a solid second at Ascot and a prior victory at Sandown. This form appears reliable; 7f is optimal, he handles the ground, and enjoys a good course record. Likely to be a serious contender again.
LOU LOU’S GIFT 3
Potential surprise. This lightly-raced filly outperformed expectations in a chaotic Group 3 at Ascot recently. Dropping in grade with a strong pace works in her favor. She has more to offer at 7f. Each-way possibility.
JUMBY 3
A determined veteran. Delivered a solid performance in a Newmarket handicap last time, and his weight has significantly decreased. This distance suits him, though his lengthy losing streak raises concerns. Should be considered for a frame finish.
WOLF OF BADENOCH 1
Notable struggles. Faced challenges at Ascot upon returning to turf with cheekpieces still on. Competent as a two-year-old, but may not have made the expected progress. Others present stronger claims with proven handicap results.
CONSOLIDATION 4
Promising return. Achieved a career-best win at Goodwood earlier, but faced bad luck last time, getting caught in traffic. Performs well on quick ground, and this 7f distance fits perfectly. Still unexposed and could rebound with a clearer path.
OBELIX 3
Still competitive. Encountered hurdles at Wolver last time due to a wide draw after a solid victory at York. Enjoys this trip on quick ground and remains competitive even with a 7lb higher weight.
LEADMAN 4
Solid contender. Won comfortably here before encountering issues at Goodwood last outing. Best suited for 7f, with form aligning well with others. His handicap rating is reasonable, placing him high on my shortlist.
COGITATE 2
Needs improvement. Not disgraced in a competitive Ascot handicap last time, but challenging to ride. He’s dropped weight but must elevate his performance to succeed in this field.
DOCUMENTING 1
Near veteran status. While still competitive with decent outings this season in large fields, his fifth place behind Obelix at York seems favorable. However, there’s little evidence he can overturn that result.

MORE THUNDER often wins by a narrow margin but consistently secures his place, as shown by his recent short-head victory in the Bunbury Cup.
This follows his strong showing in the Wokingham and two other impressive wins on the Rowley course this season.
He is certainly capable at Group 2 level and has shown a clear preference for this distance.
King’s Gamble made a commendable return from an 11-month absence, finishing quickly but narrowly missing out in six furlongs at Newbury last time.
Shifting back to a longer distance makes him a formidable opponent.
Witness Stand secured a solid win in the Lennox at Goodwood and performs admirably here as well.
He’s well in contention, while Spy Chief exhibited commendable form in the July Cup and is likely to push the front end.
RIPON

NOVELLO LAD has secured victories in two of his last three outings and appears set for another strong performance.
His best results have come at six furlongs on quick surfaces, and his double-digit draw is advantageous.
The modest 2lb hike from his win at Pontefract indicates he remains in form.
Paul Midgley excels at Ripon and could add another win to his tally.
Wreck It Ryley has exhibited solid form at Ripon and was close to the pace at Yarmouth last time.
He appears to offer good value for a place.
Ziggy’s Ariel achieved his last win here in April and only sits 2lb higher today, keeping him competitive.
Fortamour presents a good case at this level, but concerns about his lack of victories on quick ground for the nine-year-old are pertinent.
Dicko The Legend demonstrated promising form at York last outing and has a favorable draw.

SECRET GUEST finished third in this race last year and aims for an improved result this time around.
Trainer Bryan Smart appears to have targeted this event for him, providing a break since his close second at Thirsk in early July.
He returns just 3lb above his last victory, and this particular trip and course favor him.
A favorable high draw in stall 11 is crucial.
Rock Opera, starting from box 14, was close to third in competitive conditions at York recently.
This track on a fast surface should suit him, enabling him to contend again.
Grant Wood triumphed in the Silver Cup last year on this card and seems well-prepared for this race.
Despite a low draw, he offers excellent value for a frame finish.
Similar observations apply to Intervention, who showed promise at Chepstow last time and appears fairly rated.
Prince Of Pillo, starting from stall 16, has a fondness for this track, and his trainer Richard Fahey won this race last year, making him a strong contender.
NEWMARKET

BINHAREER made a significant impression on his first turf handicap assignment when gliding to victory at Ayr last month.
His jockey had the option to drop his whip, which proved unnecessary as he easily outpaced his competitors over this distance.
The previous ground was softer, but he is adaptable, showing potential as a typical William Haggas improver.
He faces an 8lb rise for that effortless win, but this shouldn’t deter him as he has much more to give.
Archduke Ferdinand offers a fair each-way chance, with his rider’s claim bringing him down to just above his last winning mark.
He thrives over this distance and prefers quick ground.
Addison Grey started his handicap journey on a positive note, finishing just shy of a length at Chepstow nine days ago.
This distance suits him well, and further improvements are anticipated after only four outings.
Silver Samurai performed better than his fifth-place finish suggests at Doncaster recently. That race was over seven furlongs, but he possesses enough speed to compete here.
