Makgopa Dazzles in Impressive Comeback to Starting XI

Orlando Pirates’ head coach Abdelsam Ouaddou commended striker Evidence Makgopa for his impressive performance upon his return to the starting lineup against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Fans were puzzled by Makgopa’s recent absence from matches, but Ouaddou clarified that he was evaluating other players, especially following the club’s 15 new signings during the off-season.

Since succeeding the well-liked José Riveiro, Ouaddou has granted Makgopa limited playing time. The team suffered defeats in their initial two league matches leading up to this crucial encounter. However, for the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, Makgopa rejoined the squad alongside experienced players Thalente Mbatha and Deano van Rooyen, who also made their return after previous omissions.

A Frustrating Draw Despite Strong Efforts

With these key players back, Pirates were unfortunate not to secure a victory. They hit the crossbar and applied significant pressure to Sundowns’ goalkeeper Ronwen Williams with multiple attempts.

Makgopa was a constant threat, pressuring the Sundowns defense and complicating their attempts to build play from the back. His relentless energy unsettled defenders Grant Kekana and Keanu Cupido, prompting many Pirates fans to question the reasoning behind the forward’s prior exclusion.

“Makgopa produced an exceptional performance,” said Ouaddou. “I was thrilled with his display, as were all his teammates. They showed great character.”

Seema Excels in Defense

Another standout player was defender Lebone Seema, who was signed from TS Galaxy. Alongside captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Seema displayed attributes that hint at his potential to become a top defender. He effectively supported ball movement from the back, alleviating the impact of injured captain Nkosinathi Sibisi’s absence for the Pirates.

“As for Seema, he played in the last match,” Ouaddou remarked.

“The club recognized his talents when he was signed. He is still young and developing. However, we must assist him in refining his skills and elevating him to become a leading player in modern football.”

The second leg of the MTN8 semi-final is scheduled for next weekend at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
