Police in Makhado Launch Manhunt for Two Gunmen After Motorist Shot Dead on N1

Polokwane – The Makhado police have launched a manhunt for two suspects who fatally shot a 38-year-old motorist after his vehicle broke down on the N1 South near the Ben Lavin road junction in Limpopo.

Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, spokesperson for the Limpopo police, confirmed that the motorist was killed on Saturday, 16 August 2025, around 19:00.

Detailing the circumstances leading to the tragic event, Brigadier Mashaba explained: “The deceased was driving a white Toyota Corolla with three passengers from Gauteng to Musina when they encountered a breakdown on the N1 South within the Makhado policing area.”

He noted that the motorist was signaling for assistance to passing vehicles.

“A white Toyota Fortuner stopped, and two unknown individuals approached, appearing to offer help,” the police spokesperson clarified.

“The suspects asked about the driver of the Toyota Corolla.

“When he was identified, one of the suspects quickly produced a firearm and fired several shots at the driver.

“The other three passengers scattered in different directions to escape. The suspects then got into their vehicle and fled the scene.”

After being notified, Brigadier Mashaba indicated that the police and paramedics responded promptly to the location.

“Upon arrival, the [injured motorist] was pronounced dead due to severe injuries. His identity is being withheld for investigative reasons,” Brigadier Mashaba added.

“A murder case has been filed by the police.

“The motive behind the murder is currently unknown, but further investigations will provide additional information.”
